Q: Why can't I download anything!?!?!?
A: You need to make 30 non spam posts and after these posts you have to make sure you have been a member for 3 days. This does not mean you have to make 30 posts within 3 days but make 30 posts then make sure you have been a member for 3 days (your join date was a minimum of 3 days ago) then send a group pm to all active staff to be granted access to the Approved Members group.
To do this, go to your pm inbox, and click the 'compose new' link. In the 'recipient's name' field, put in Deepside. In the 'other recipients' field, put in the following: ElHefeSupremo,Kitten,Neme copy and paste if it'll make it easier, don't forget the commas. - Make sure the 'send to others as' drop down menu is set to 'invitation'. Your request will be ignored if you leave out anyone on that list. Please don't do this more than once, one is all you'll need. That list will be updated to keep up to date with which staff are currently active.
For an example of where you need to be... Click here and the message itself should look like this.
Q: Why do I need to jump through all these hoops? I just want mods!
A: This site is a forum, not a download hub like the Nexus. Because of bandwidth costs, and in the spirit of community, the mods hosted here are only available to contributing members of the forum. You can contribute in a lot of ways, for instance uploading mods , writing up a tutorial etc. While donating is a contribution, this will not give you access to the downloads. The 30 posts/3 day rule is just our way of seeing if you want to be a member, or if you just want to use our bandwidth without giving anything back. Uploading a mod, or donating will also count towards approval, though that is done on a case by case basis, there's no set rules or limits.
Q: What constitutes a 'well thought out' post?
A: To put it simply, thought. Does your post contribute a decent amount to the discussion? Does it contain full sentences? If somebody else had made that post, what would you think of it? If you're offering an opinion, don't just state what it is, justify it! The whole 'well thought out' thing is said so that people know that spam and fluff posts are not acceptable here. You don't have to write a whole thesis in every post, just put some effort into it. Think about what you're posting. It's really not hard.
It is especially important if you're starting a new thread. In fact, you have to put even more thought into an op (original post) than a regular post. If you want to start a new discussion, make sure you've made the best contribution you can. Introduce people who may not know what you're talking about to the subject, explain it, offer links etc. Provide your own input, your opinion, whatever. Don't just make a new topic about quantum thermodynamics with an op like 'What do you think of it?'. Tell everyone what they need to know in order to start talking about it, then start talking about it yourself.
Q: How do I donate?
A: There is a link on the right hand side of the forums. Just click it! Bear in mind though, that Maxunit and only Maxunit handles donations, so discuss all such matters with him.
Q: I'm not an approved member, but I want to upload something. Can I do that?
A: Absolutely. New members are not able to post in certain forums in an effort to cut down on spam. Contact a staff member and tell them about what you want to upload, if it sounds good then they'll give you the ability to post in the Download Database forums, and upload files. As stated above, mods count towards approval on a case by case basis. For example, let's say Skree asked to upload his BF2142 mod here (yes I know it's already here, this is just an example
Q: I pmed a mod but haven't been approved yet. Why??
A: Look over your posts. Is your post history littered with fluff posts? How many full sentences can you see in the list? You won't get approval if your posts are crap, and sometimes the staff will simply ignore you and not waste their time on you. If your posts are decent however, maybe it's because you've only got 30 posts. 30 posts isn't a formality, it's the point at which a member is eligible for approval. We expect people to keep posting after getting 30 posts. Did you do it all in one day? Doesn't look good for you. The staff generally won't approve someone whose post count is only 30 right away, we'll often wait a few days to see what you do. If you don't do anything, you probably won't get approved.
But if neither of those explain it, then it's most likely that the staff simply haven't had a chance to get to your request yet, so please be patient.
This is rather small right now but as we grow I will update as needed.
