[Project] We are looking for people

Dear VGUnians, dear Visitors.

We just launched a Game Project and are looking for people in all required departments, which include:

Coding
Modeling
Animation
UVMapping and Unwrapping
Texturing
Sound
Music
etcetera pp.

You should be able to work in a Team and understand, what it means, to work in a collaborative way.

It currently is a non-paid offering.

A bit about the Project:

"Smorgasbord" (an inside joke for the Project) is a Submarine MMO settled in the far Future. Humanity made Earth's
Surface uninhabitable after several wars. Now humanity is forced to live a life under water.
A new Era begins and we will see, where it leads us.

Short description of features:

Project "Smorgasbord" will be a Submarine MMO, as described above, where the Player will be able to control his own Submarine,
from small to large, build up his own Empire or create his own Pirate Army. Whatever you do, will have an impact on the world.
Will you be a Trader, a Smuggler, a Researcher or even a Leader?
The choice is yours to make and shape your part of this world to your desire.

If you want to get a better insight, check YouTube for 2 games called: Schleichfahrt (English Title: Archimedian Dynasty) and Aquanox.

Project "Smorgasbord" is powered by the HeroEngine, which also powers Star Wars: The Old Republic.

If you are interested in joining our Project, send a PM to Maxunit or an E-Mail to: xxdarkslayerxx[AT]hotmail[DOT]com with a Portfolio, if possible.

I can work as a consultant for mostly everything related to modelling and texturing, since I have absolutely no experience in coding and sound. Limited experience in animation.

I would consider myself in apprentice level of modelling and texturing if that'd help at all.

These are all very advanced to me (for now) but I could probably work in making a trailer if given the chance.

Awesome, submarines! (currently reading Das Boot, very good book imho, also one of the best war films ever)
And it's post-apocalyptic, my favorite genre! How much better can it get? Well, the vast unexplored sea holds a lot of mysteries. I see a lot of potential in this setting.

The HeroEngine seems to be quite capable. The concept of the HeroCloud seems to be similar to Dropbox. This will make it a lot easier to work in a team. Seems like a great choice, although i don't know any alternatives for free engines with this amount of pre-coded features.

It's gonna be a very cool game if it turns out to be similar to the referenced games. Schleichfahrt was one of my favorite games back in the days. Aquanox was great too. I remember Aquanox having a multiplayer mode, i never tried it tho (i think it was just DM and CTF anyway). Talking of Submarine games, i also got Silent Hunter 5, but i don't like it as much as the classic shooter games, it's too much of a simulation (a very good one, just not what i enjoy playing)

I don't know how much of a concept you already got for the gameplay, but allow me to ask some questions, i am really interested in this project.
So, is Smorgasbord gonna be like Aquanox in a MMO world (kinda like Freelancer?), or more like Eve Online with a lot of RPG elements? Is the player alone in his ship or does he have a crew (other players or NPCs)? Is the world totally open or are there marked-off areas or instances? Does the game have a main story or do only the players form the history? Same question for factions/guilds, are there pre-made ones or do the players found them? Or is it, as the working title suggests, a bit of everything?

I too am interested in participating, though my only references are my F3/FNV/Skyrim mods (mostly texturing and scripting), and some maps for the Quake and Unreal engines. Also produced a lot of music (but no game music so far). Oh and i was working on textures and sounds for a turn-based WW2 strategy game called Air Wars, but it was cancelled before the coding really began.
My biggest disadvantages are my rather short attention span and my limited time. But if you need any help with sounds, music or textures, i'll be happy to give you a hand.

ah you guys are using heroengine, not bad of a choice, i would say UDK or Unity would be a nice choice for a game like that.

The Problem with UDK and Unity is, that both do not support MMOs out of the Box and have way higher Hardware demands and Unity needs Unity Pro to create a MMO and Unity Pro costs 1.500 USD per Seat. Epic wants a very nice cut from the profits, if you go commercial.

I wouldn't say I'm a goddess at it, but I'm quite comfortable in the areas of Sound/Music making/editing.

is this thing going anywhere? I do have a newly design ( still working on ) modeled after the victor 2 nuclear sub with missles and ports ( scuds tweeked from Fallout NV ) the sub is untextured ( still ) andis still a bit big for any MMO even fallout ( I like .nif format ) ( 63481 by 73494 ) with 2 missiles this equates to about 5mb without texture or UV ( .nif format ).

so at least if this does not take off or go anywhere it will still work in fallout/skrim nif/XML formats ( thanks to 3ds max )

Hey MAX,it's nice=)

How about modeller?

The MMO idea has been pretty much put on a hold, since it would be a really large-scale project and only do-able with proper funding and a proper Team.

Right now I'm evaluating one or another Engine like the UDK and see, if there's someone like this do-able on a smaller scale.

There some free MMO makers if you interested.

It's not the problem with MMO Makers, because we have complete access to the HeroEngine HeroCloud, where the HeroEngine is the same engine used by Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Problem is, the amount of work you need to put into a MMO Project. It requires more than a few people to work on some stuff here and there. It requires a lot of people...kinda like...50 or more.

And you won't find people for such a huge project easily without offering payment.

It is easier to find people, who are willing to contribute to a smaller project in the spare time.

interesting, but unfortunatly i have no time to contribute in any maner.

Not sure if i could be of any use but i have been learning 3ds max for about a mounth and have some limited knowledge in mapping in UDK from a couple years ago

I might be able to provide some assistance however i've only been using 3DS Max for about 3 months.

I wish I could help, but I don't know how.

The MMO Idea is pretty much dead. I'm working on something else right now, a Side-Scroll Shooter using the Unreal Engine UDK, but if anyone is interested to join, just post it here or send me a PM.

I think we should make the game an rpg top down view in the overworld but in a battle have sidescroll kinda like Tales of Phantasia.

That way if you are going to make a fallout based game you would have the open world feel without getting rid of the kind of gameplay you would like to achieve.

I could certainly provide voice acting if required, I have a whole team that'd be willing to help.

If you guys need beta testers once you get everything setup then I would be willing to help but anything beyond that is far too advance for me sorry =(.
